Move to a better connection?
« on: June 25, 2007, 09:10:10 PM »
We have the option to move the server to a gigabit connection, but we'll get a new IP in the process. This means people will lose their favorite marked on Ulysses HQ and we'll have a few hours downtime while people refresh their DNS cache.

What are your opinions?

Is there an additional cost, or is this just suddenly they said, hey we have a gigabit connection if you want it?

Free due to some random downtimes lasting a few seconds at a time. From what I saw of the converstaion (Meg posted to me), it seems as though its supposed to be a bit more reliable.

Sorry I forgot to mention it was free. Here's the conversation.

Quote
Jeff:
I got a new gigabit connection out of san diego.  people seem to really like it

Brett Smith:
How much is it? Will it stop those occasional downtimes?

Brett Smith:
Well, I realize nothing can stay up 100% time, but stay up more often anyways.

Jeff:
No charge, but it is better than the current stuff.  The only bad thing is that you're ip will change

Brett Smith:
Hmm, can I consider it and get back to you? Would there be downtime while transferring networks/connections?

Jeff:
absolutely, just let me know anytime.  There will be about 5 minutes of downtime during the transfer and you will get new ip's

Brett Smith:
Alright, thanks for all your help!

Jeff:
no problem, talk to you son

Jeff:
soon

Brett Smith:
Oh, final question, bandwidth limit would be the same on the gigabit connection right?

Jeff:
yes

I would have to say yes as well.

As far as the IP changing... Most of the "regulars" will know to just look for it if they want to play on it.  The only people that this will keep away are the people who don't care where they play and just do a quick search through history.

This is obviously a conspiracy.

Megiddo really wants to confuse us by switching servers, thus profusely confounding those who are too foolish to search the server listing for the actual host. However, he requires popular consent in order for his alien overlords to approve the process and initiate server transfer. The conversation posted is indeed no forgery. Observe how the warlord lets slip that Megiddo is his coveted son, hidden behind our knowledge for all these years. The 'downtime' he proclaims is really for him to gain some time to warp to home base and recharge his illusion generators to remain in human form. Rebel against this certain doom, you fools! We cannot let the Earth fall to such treachery.

Indeed Banyon.

Anyways, turns out the machine they have me on doesn't like the network cards they have so I have to wait until Monday when they can get a compatible one. 9 AM PST for those of you who for some reason need to know. ;)

Which really means...
Jeff'f boss -
"Oh CRAP! JEFF!!? You told this guy we'd hook him up to gigabit FOR FREE!?!??!?!?!!? We're running him on an old P4 server with two integrated 10/100 NICs and one PCI slot. Jeff, oh Jeff. How many times have we had to tell you...we don't have enterprise capable gigabit NICs for our servers on PCI! NOW we have to find a PCI-x capable motherboard to put him on and swap processors. Jeff...guess what YOU get to do this holiday weekend. I don't care if your family is in town..you did it. And, since he's getting a better motherboard AND connection...you're not getting any extra money for this. Be glad you're not hourly"
