New Video card

(1/2) > >>

JamminR:
I got an early Christmas present today.
BFG 260 GTX OCX maxcore 55

I'm about to try installing it and if all goes well, will be back in a few hours.
If something goes wrong, I may end up having to use my olllld laptop for net access.

Megiddo:
What could possibly go wrong with installing new hardware? :P

Good luck and see you soon with the new screamin' GPU

JamminR:
I'm happy so far.
Results are good. I've not closed the case yet but I like what I'm seeing.

Using 3dmark06 (free) default settings (because the free one won't let you change anything)
Old GPU config
SLI - 2x BFG Geforce 7800 GT OC - = 63xx 3dmarks (Didn't write it down)
New GPU config
1x BFG GTX 260 OCX maxcore 55 - 10374

JamminR:
Update
After looking at my 3dmark06 score, remembering seeing higher scores in reviews/roundups on the web, I started doing some hardware investigating. Using the system info tool in the NVidia control panel, I found that I was only using 8 lanes of my PCI Express bus.

Wait...Wut? PCI-E should be using 16 when running a single card.

* JamminR thinks about it a few minutes...DOH.
I put the card in one of the two slots meant for SLI, which, only allows 8 lanes. (It's not a PCI-E v2 board)
Going to go put the card in between the two 8x slots and will retest.

Will repost.

JamminR:
Oddly enough, very little improvement. 10642
I can only presume the age of my motherboard is limiting the video card at least in relation to 3dmark06
board - nforce 4
cpu - Amd Opteron 185 (2x 1mb @ 2.61ghz) (Socket 939)
RAM - 2 x 1gb DDR 3200 2-3-2-5 - dual channel mode

Either way, I like it.
Got a good deal on it. BFG has lifetime warranty, and it will carry me onto the next motherboard/cpu upgrade I get within the next year or two.
