Ban Issues with Multiple Servers from same dir
« on: December 15, 2012, 03:32:36 PM »
I have 2 TTT servers running from the same directory and when i ban users on one server, those users can still connect to my other server.

Since both servers are in the same directory, the ban list is being shared, but its not being read.  Is the banlist only re-read on map change?  Can it be read on every player connect ?

Gmod (and perhaps Source) lock files when running one server.
This isn't something ULX can work around.
You could look into UBan or another SQL based ban solution, but running more than one from same folders is likely to cause more issues than just bans.

I dont have that lock issue with any of the files.  I can even upload new copies of maps and lua files while server is running and nothing bad happens.

It's how the server handles bans. It reads the list and saves it into memory on map change/bootup.

You could put..

The only way that I know to reload the file is with RunConsoleCommand("exec", "banned_user.cfg")

but... Garry has exec blocked.

You might be better off moving to a multi-server global ban system.

Aren't all the multi server ban systems broken with the new ULX?  I wanted to use Sourcebans but the author of the script says its not compatible with the new ULX.

The applications, yes.
The actual Lua and SQL functions for writing to a DB, new ones exist.
Several have released different versions/using different SQL modules even within our Releases area.
Just have to look through some of the later pages of posts.
If you're willing to learn how to set up your own database, there is a new release that actually use the same DB structure Sourcemod did.

We did not build ULX around the idea that the data directory would be shared, sorry. While it's possible to support such a thing, you're the first person we've heard of who has it setup that way. :)

Mine is setup that way too Meg. :D It's nice for a system where you want to save player data for a gamemode or point system to the sv.db or flatfiles and share them on all servers you are running. Not so nice for the source files such as bans.

If you're interested.. here is my script for user authentication and bans... If you don't know basic lua or how to set up the MySQLOO module, then don't even bother with this.. but here it is...

The commands.. and you can change them in the lua are:

g4p_setgroup <player> <group>
It checks to make sure the group exists before trying to add them. You can also give it a SteamID for the playername if the player isn't connected to the server. Currenty restricted to superadmins only. you can edit this in the code.

g4p_ban <player>
You can give this a SteamID or a partial player name if the player is connected. Restricted to admins and above.

g4p_unban <steamID>
Checks to make sure the steamID is valid and actually listed as a ban. Restricted to admins and above.

Edit your table name and database info at the top of the file.

You will need the following columns in your database table.

steamid     -Players SteamID
pname       -Players Name (Will be updated every time the player joins if it's different)
pgroup       -Players authentication group
lastplayed  -The last time the player connected to the server
banned      -Is the player banned?
badmin       -The SteamID of the admin who banned the player.

Notes: This is not necessarily a ULib/ULX addon so it needs to be in your garrysmod/lua/autorun/server folder (if this doesn't exist, create it).

It overrides the ULib authentication.. so you will HAVE to use this for authentication as well as bans. It works fine though.

Note: All the commands work from the dedicated console as well. The ban and unban will only echo in game. The setgroup will only echo in the dedicated console if run from there. This isn't an error.. I just didn't much care to make it super fancy.. it gets me by for what I need.

There are a lot of commented out debug code. Some of it is useful if you want to uncomment it.

Several have released different versions/using different SQL modules even within our Releases area.
If you're willing to learn how to set up your own database, there is a new release that actually use the same DB structure Sourcemod did.
If you don't know basic lua or how to set up the MySQLOO module, then don't even bother with this.. but here it is...

As indicated in the past few posts, even the link being pointed too, Gmod + Lua + SQL is NOT for the faint of heart.
Though we don't mind helping those asking thought out questions, don't just go copy pasting stuff then expecting us to make it all work for you if you have no research done on your own as to how to make it work to begin with.
I personally don't know SQL query language.
I'm geek enough to read what Lua (and PHP and a few other 'net language) scripts using it are doing most of the time, but wouldn't expect someone reading it with no idea what it was to come here and say 'it doesn't work' and expect an answer.

The link I posted I wrote. I wrote and rewrote it specifically so you could copy/paste it and it would work. If you know how to edit a file you should be able to make sourcebans work pretty easily.

The hardest part would be filling in the config file. If you can't figure out how to setup a user to access the sourcebans database then don't bother... I would question how you even installed sourcebans to start off with.
