Changing steam name, possible hack?

The other night I was on my server, and noticed one of the player's names changing. The first part stayed the same, then further off to the right, it seemed like there was code changing like a marquee, it was partly cut off so it was hard to make out completely, but I found it very odd. The console wasn't throwing errors or anything, I really couldn't figure it out.

Any ideas? I'm thinking it was a possible hack, or attempt at one

probably some one useing name changer but that should kick them in ttt by default no ?

I turned that off on my server, I just found it odd that the first part (main name), stayed the same, and the other half hidden part was constantly changing.

Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of changing your name during TTT anyways?

Its not really a hack as much as it is a glitch. Its most likely an OpenSteamWorks module changing the users name, because OpenSteamWorks would not be automatically limited by Steam.

On the other hand he could have had a glitchy unicode character in his name, that appeared to be changing when it really was not.

An easy way to fix this glitch is to have the user set their name when they join your server, there you can stop them from entering unicode and stuff like that.
After you do the step above make sure to have some thing check the users name and if does change have the server display the set name dialog again or simply kick them.
