Title: Sony removing "Other OS" option from PS3
Post by: JamminR on March 28, 2010, 09:13:21 PM
Ok, I've not verified anywhere else on the net...and it seems fishy due to the date the firmware is supposed to be released (Apr 1), but, Sony is supposedly removing the ability to install other operating systems on it's PS3s (http://games.slashdot.org/story/10/03/29/0227251/Install-Other-OS-Feature-Removed-From-the-PS3).

I won a PS3 two to three years ago.
Though I'd never installed any other OS on it, I was waiting for the day that I could. That is, the day that someone got 'root' access to it's full hardware features.
I don't play games (much, only own 2 or 3) on mine, but I do use mine as a BluRay player, and, to stream music, videos, pictures from the web and from a media server I have set up in another location of my house.
The PS3 requires that I use a trans-coder (http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/) for many of those formats.

I'd hoped one day the quality of a linux or other OS would allow me to not have to rely on the CPU of the server to do the heavy work, and still allow full BR-Disc decoding.

Thanks again Sony.... I appreciate you yet again changing my options in a bad way.
Let me introduce you to a great developer. His name is Garry Newman, and he too appreciates extra security implemented in ways that annoy more good than they do bad.

Having trouble from the emo telling if you're being sarcastic or not.
Just in case you're not, PlayStation 3
If you are, well, yeah, I won it...kept it because its a darn good media streaming device (DLNA) and one of the first few BluRay players available.
Plays a game or too nicely also, but, I'm not a console gamer.
Wife and I like the Motorstorm series... it came with the first one... she got us Pacific Rift for Christmas.

PC > Console  ;D
(Especially if you have the money)

On Topic:
I've never owned/used a PS3, so I can't really say what I think of this.. however, it's things like this that keep me away from companies like Apple-- companies with a VERY locked down ecosystem.

Palm FTW!

Nah, PCs are old school. Myself, I'm planning on cashing in all my ULX moneys and going for a stylish iPad: http://www.mervisdiamond.com/tacori-diamonds

/me cancels his subscription here... and to think, I thought I was helping a starving college student through school. Should have known I was funding college bling.

Got a BluRay drive for my birthday (old dvd writer had failed, figured I go a bit upgraded)
Tried playing it on my 22inch monitor that uses DVI.
Nope. Sorry. Can't... may we suggest VGA.
????!!!!
Uh. Ok. Kinda dumb drm, but, sure. Suggest it
/me hooks up a vga cable to the secondary output of his video card, secondary input of his monitor, spans desktop.. drags video app to vga side...presses monitor switch button.
It works.
What a bunch of malarky I've got to do, but, it works if/when I want to watch a movie in my office.
Not something I do often (ever?)

Off to find a UDF 2.5+ driver for XP.

Oh, back more on topic.
Consoles.. why greater than PC? They have to be upgraded almost as often as PCs are (at least in my case...average video card upgrade is ~5-7 years)
PS3 - seeing more and more musing about it being an april fools joke.
We'll find out.
