Yes, I stole this from garry's bog. I've always used http://testmy.net before today, functional, but not quite as fun as this...
I thought it might be interesting to compare speeds of different areas/ISPs. Garry pulled up a great site for this: http://speedtest.net/
Post your results here!
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/93386142.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)
Edit: I should mention I just switched ISPs today, I'm getting about twice the speed I used to.

I really don't like charter, they promise 3 megabytes minimum, and before now I used to always get about 50 KBPS.
Blegh.
Lollers.

Really scary Mank, :o
Comsidering they give you the URL (WITH FORUM TAGS) to place into the forum.

I just got a new router. Old one died (along with an 8port switch) due to a nearby lightning strike.
Wow. Amazing what an old router can cause.
Here's from my old router (previous post)

*cry*
-
JamminR, that's likely due to Comcast's "Power Boost". What time did you run that test? Depending on network usage your downspeed can spike quite high. Unfortounatly they don't boost upspead :(.
-
Yeah, I figured it was due to Powerboost.
However, its been in our area for some time now. My old router wouldn't go above 11mbps.
I've come to discover (while testing other things) that my gaming rig MTU is only 1300 too.
I plan on correcting that today. (It was late last night when I found that out)
I've still not found a 'speed test' site that will measure speed after the 'power boost' speeds.
I figure they'll be around 8-9mbps average (what I saw in my old test)

My router sucks.
"HEY GUYZ I THINK I'LL RANDOMLY FORGET MY DNS CACHE FOR NOW SO YOU HAVE TO RESTART ME"
or
"HEY GUYZ I JUST LOVE YOU I THINK I'LL RESTART WHEN YOU ARE IN MIDDLE OF IMPORTANT INTRANET GAME"

Oh, you have a Linksys router too?
Amazingly, it fit the 3rd of your list weekly (it wouldn't renew DHCP from my ISP, so I'd have to reset to get new IP), and the 2nd of that list if I ran file sharing apps for more than three or four days)
Though I'm using a Linksys now that I got from Walmart to tie me over, I've ordered an Asus WL-566GM (https://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=250501)
(If you read its features, yes, ignore the theoretical 208mbps wireless transfer rate. I got it for compatibility with several open source firmware projects)

I took the test while running my gmod server with 6 people on it.

This is using a souped up linux (under VMWare right now, I'll check if the real deal is any different... I suspect ping would be less).
-
Wait, Meg, where are you that you're connecting to Twin Cities, MN?
Also, this is here at school, run just now while everyone is on, and under fairly heavy load.
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/271987861.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)
I've run tests when most people are gone on break, and it's up around 16000. Now if only they didn't block all incoming ports and I could actually use that up bandwidth.
-
I'm near Cedar Rapids, IA. Yay. Neat upload there. :)
-
Heh, so you're about 4 hours from me now (driving). Planing to see the entire country before you get out of college?
Oh, just realized, I'm also running a linux torrent right now to, so that's eating ~200 up/~150 down as well. ;)

Here's off a US server for reference... I gotta wonder if it gets choked once it reaches the states.
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/314263766.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)
-
Nice!
I gotta wonder if it gets choked once it reaches the states.
Sort of. Not by design/on purpose though.
Though it seems majority of the Asian countries have done excellent jobs of beefing up internal infrastructure, the cables to/from those countries that head towards US based IPs haven't really (or at least, not enough to keep up with demand.
US Gateway routers or connections to them are, for the most part, slow*.
* Though, hundreds of thousands (millions) of people using data traffic (net/voip) across a underwater cable and you still get 6mbps shouldn't really be considered slow, eh?
-
Wow, that is fast Meg! Looks like it must be some sort of 30/30 connection there. Ah, when FIOS gets here I'll have to upgrade to the killer connection. Of course that most likely won't be for so long that I shouldn't even think about it.... :(
-
Though I've not seen any news of it on broadbandreports.com (and I rarely check any comcast sites), it seems my local Comcast upload speedboost has been increased.
Speedboost used to give me ~25-30mbps download/2mbps upload, that would then decrease to 8mbps down/512k up after about 30seconds of transfer.
Though I don't know if my actual rate has changed... boost upload sure has.
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/672344591.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)

You could totally host a gmod server now! :P
-
Uh, sure, for about 30 seconds at a time. :P
Powerboost = fast for about 30 seconds, then a drop down to 'purchased' speeds.
For me, I think thats 512kb, perhaps higher.
I'd love to have 2mb constant. I've been searching broadbandreports.com - can't find any mention of speed increases, powerboost or not.
-
If I ran that scan Id probably cause my internet to implode...
Here is a rough estimate.. no crap..
Upload 10kb/s
Download 16b/s
THose are cap speed.. not average by any stretch of the word... Average Down for me is 9kb/s Dont really upload ever so dont know on that one.
-
Wow, I'm quite envy of your internet speed. That's really fast! :o
-
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/683048405.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)
It's actually 30/30Mbit but the upload is not on my side today :P Norway btw
-
Nice Don. Is that constant, or a time based burst like my cable ISP Comcast uses?
-
It's constant : ) Great upgrade from the old cable to Fiber :p
-
Ah, fiber. I don't expect America's current largest fiber deployment company (Verizon) to come through my part of the US for another 10-20 years.
Also, I did some FTP transfer upload tests to get a true upload reading for my connection.
HTTP bursts as seen in the speedometer image in previous post are 5mb for about ~30 seconds.
Actual transfer rate after the time/byte methodology slows down to 1Mbps / 131KB/s
Thats better than the .5 Mbps I had a year ago, still not as nice as what I'd prefer (2+)
-
LOL I thought Americans had fast internet

Comcast here on JBLM.. It's not too bad.. the node sucks.. so like my pings to anywhere not in Seattle kind of suck (100+) and my Mbps are lower than this.. but this is my optimal speeds.

-
Not sure I've ranted about this.
Since at least June 19, I've been fighting Comcast regarding tv quality and internet speeds.
Sound skips, digitizing of picture for TV, internet speeds as low as .58mbps during worst case.
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/893044396.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)
Right now, it's not so bad.
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/918563940.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)
Until June, I could get;
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/831385628.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)
I'm currently working with escalations.
I've already gotten $80 credit.
Still working $60 more for 3 missed appointments, 2 of which tried to blame my wiring ("but were 'nice' and didn't charge me")
I now have a voice recording of escalations guy saying the node is saturated.
My wiring my butt.
Anyway, that's another long story for another long post, and the story isn't over yet.
In fact, I now get to tell the escalations department that internet is now broken again.

Taken with 4 people on my gmod server, I'll edit this again if I get a chance to test with no one on the server
-
Ok, so, early March, Comcrap finally upgraded my area.
My docsis 3 modem has 4 channels down, 1 up.
Still seems like oversell/use for my tier, but, meh, if they can guarantee I'll always have my current speeds, I'm ok with it.
I no longer have "power boost", but my top speed is consistent as long as the server can feed me.
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/1250883680.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)
I saw a regular here (krooks!) complain in another thread that it's difficult to get reliable speed tests due to various ISP's powerboost.
I agree.
Several applications are available for local machine speed monitoring, which can show the rate after boost cuts off.
One I recommend for personal use is SIW (http://www.gtopala.com/siw-download.html), it can give you more information than you'd really want to know, and a whole bunch of info you do want.
(Free for personal, has 'newer' downloads for cost - I've been tempted to purchase it several times. Perhaps if it ever goes on sale)
Actual download sites that (usually) will download long enough to get you past speedboost.
http://testmy.net (use the automatic)
And, old fashioned large file downloading.
Unfortunately for me, the site's based in the UK I think..I lost some overhead going across the trans-ocean cables, but, I was still satisfied to see a good steady speed after 5+ minutes.
Your milages WILL vary depending on ISP and routing.
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/download.html
(They even offer different ports.. some ISPs prioritize port 80 over others since it's standard HTTP browsing)
That site showed me I no longer get powerboost.
EDIT(Hmm, as of this edit, I can't get any of the files. Tracert shows high pings. Maybe it will correct itself. I've no idea what time it is in the UK atm.

Aww, so you DON'T have 14.4 like I suspected in the hijacked thread...
Thanks for the info btw, I will get another test when my server clears out ;)

I just did the test at work, only 1.8mbps up

Well, i thought i am bad on it...
hi i test the speed of my internet in many sites i got the best speed results from here http://www.ip-details.com/ (http://www.ip-details.com/)
my results are
download=1.09Kbps
upload=0.87Kbps
i dont know the reason why my speed seems to be slow many of them said that if Cable Internet services share bandwidth with satellite Internet access.
If there are many subscribers using that same bandwidth, it can slow down the connection. kindly guide me how to solve this problem .
-
Not tested in a long time.
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/1624780139.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)
I don't remember if I've ever stated, but I now have a samknows.com router. It monitors montly for me. Have had it since December of 20010, 3 months before my local upgrade.
Figures. I signed up so FCC would know that Comcast sucks.
Then they upgrade my particular area.
Ah well, I'm still enjoying it.
Also, just checked my net usage Comcrap meter... I got netflix in October..went from ~70GB average usage to ~115.
I'm considering cancelling TV during the next rate hike and going internet only (Netflix/Hulu Plus, torrent for other shows not available through PS3 media server/Tversity/, and a Roku I've asked for for Christmas 2011) in addition to HD attic mounted antenna.
I can only imagine I'll be hitting 200GB of my 250GB limit.
-
I just realized that my speedtest results from work were no longer visible. So here they are again! [nobrag]
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/1625941781.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)
Although, if it makes you guys feel any better, my home network gets about 4 Mb/s down, 1 Mb/s up :( And that's if we're lucky!
-
I call foul on Stickly Man's result, since the link between his school and the server he's using is a huge backbone for the area. Show us results to another server!
Anyways, here's the results from my school. Surprisingly good! Don't mind the censor, just don't want crazy ULX fans hanging out at my school bugging me while I'm researching. :)
-
I agree that my last work results were unfair, so I did it again. This time with a somewhat better work computer (which may not affect the speed at all), and I'll use UEN's speedtest.net server now that they have one!
WHOOOOOOOOO!!
.. Okay fine, here's the results to a server in Bangor, Maine, on the other side of the US:
For ~2,200 miles, that's still pretty great :P
And because I was bored here's a test to Frankfurt, Germany:
And now you know how distance can affect internet speed! Yay!
We're getting Comcast internet at home tomorrow, so I'll probably be doing some tests from home on our new internets.
-

Internet in Afghanistan!

It hurts to look at that, Mr. P.

whoaa, seriously Mr P, how do you do that?? :o
-
very slowly... ;D

very slowly... ;D

-
hi I test the speed of my internet in many sites I got the best and accurate speed results from this site http://www.scanmyspeed.com/ (http://www.scanmyspeed.com/)
my results are
download=1.04Mbps
upload=0.77Mbps.
-
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/1886866190.png)
On Facepunch, I bet I would have gotten banned for posting on a topic this old.
-
So I get a letter from Comcrap, oh, wait, it's XFinity now.
"We're raising your speeds 25%" "Restart your modem"
Before and after attached.
Here's my issues.
1) Why now?
A) Someone in my area actually competing? (Unfortunately, I live in a part of my town that has no competition. It's 1.5mbps or 25. Some areas have Knology and UVerse to compete)
B) Next year's internet rate hike (We've not had a big net hike in a while, only TV) - "We've improved your service, so had to raise cost"
C) We want you to meet your soft cap quicker
(Notice al my reason's aren't to "provide better service to me")
-
Yah, all those seem like valid reasons coming from Comcast :P Did they just upgrade to Docsys 3.0 in your area? Or was it already there?
-
Doc 3.0 been here since at least March of 2011.
That's when I went from oversold node topping ~1mbps during peak usage hours to upgraded fiber line (to node) consistent 20mbps 4 channel bonded connection.
Guess they wanted to stress test it for a year.
Another test. Used the download, automatic, to help rule out if they're using speedboost.
(http://testmy.net/nFgQK07.png) (http://testmy.net/)
-
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/2114900076.png)
-
So apparently Comcast has been doubling the speeds in their plans, and my friend told me yesterday that it was hitting our area today. Here's two speedtests I just took--
Before modem reboot:
After a modem reboot:
Well, that was a pleasant surprise! :) It at least makes the $74/mo. me and my brother split for internet worth it. I hear that they've phased out powerboost with this latest upgrade, too, which seems to be true as far as I can tell.
-
Sadly, they've still not got my area. According to BBR (broadbandreports.com), they've been planning this a while.
They hit one state north of me, they hit one state south of me, for whatever reason, they've not hit the city that actually has the tech support call center for most of the eastern sea-board.
Also, Stickly, check out http://speedof.me ... though it's not always as fast, it will give better anti-powerboost test (I find that speedtest.net still shows I have full 25mbps, but, speedof.me starts at 25, then finally goes down to average of 16-17, which is what my samknows.com FCC monitoring shows as average for my monthly average speeds)
Tested just now - still have powerboost at 25, then slows to 17.
(no, not that bad, but, still not upgraded either)
-
Speedof.me shows this:
..Despite the weird glitch on the upload, it looks like there's no powerboost to me!
-
Megiddo approves of 55 Mbps speeds. :D
I'm glad that I upgraded all my network components to gigabit a while back. I know we're not quite there yet for Internet speeds, but it's close enough that there may be issues with 100 Mbps wiring now due to various overheads. Now I just need to pick up a DOCSIS 3.0 modem in preparation for these speed when I get back home. :D

It's really hard to get good Internet in Australia
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/2616466263.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)
But that's really good for Australia.
I'm also downloading a game.

Not bad at all.

Pales in comparison to Stickly Mans
But seriously Canadian internet is decently fast but they cap you really low on bandwidth only got 100GB's a month >:(
-
only got 100GB's a month >:(
I'd pay overages monthly.
Wife and I average 150gb monthly with the streaming and gaming we do.

My area FINALLY upgraded.
Went from ~16 to ~25 down.
~3.5 to ~5 up.
Now I can blow through my 300gb limit even faster!
(honestly though, i only average 130-150gb a month for my household streaming)

Congrats on the upgrade, JamminR! :)

there we go thats roughly the max speed i can get at school lol xD

You should try the speedtest to another server, nathan. Often the education network in the state is providing these speed tests, which makes the test unfair for those on the education network.

that's australia for you

Oops, didn't notice it was that far away.
But according to my IP's geolocation location it's in south australia and the closest speedtest.net allows me to do is Adelaide.

and somehow it's gotten worse :o

The only difference was your upload (well, the ping too, but still). So logical.

My internet at home has a decent download speed, but the upload speed is really bad in comparison. I'm not the one paying for the internet either, so I can't really change ISPs (or even upgrade to fiber).

If I posted mine, it'd be so embarrassing. :-[

I regret being with Dodo internet... All Australians will agree here... It's awful.
It takes so long to upload maps to a GMod server I have running...

The Upload compared to the Download isn't that good nor that bad, i benefit from having a dedicated machine for Server's.

That's a great speed, Fanney :P

Just found out cogeco gave us a free speed upgrade from technology improvements in the area :D

free speed upgrade
Nice!
Be careful if cogeco has transfer caps though.
Now you can get to those caps that charge overages even faster!
(I'm in same boat, though I've not yet gotten the increase, I've seen reports that package deal users are getting 20+mbps more than non, but that non package will eventually get the bump too, but, no cap increase.
My ISP has 300gb cap...I'm often 200-240. All it would take is one major steam sale and a few large steam game upgrades to put me over.

With the speed increase they raised the bandwidth cap to 300 Gigabytes from 240 and now offer unlimited for an additional $15 a month

If your internet speed cannot download a 9GB game in less than 10 minutes. I think it's time for a new internet service provider or something.
Also, I have never seen any ISP go by a set amount of GBs per month, that is just bull****. That sounds like a phone plan to me, although I must be lucky to have never seen such a thing. Luckily, I will soon have Google Fiber, the speeds on that shizzz.

Welcome to Canada home of monopolized internet, and cell phones. Where the service is expensive and the quality is ****.

Comcast just upped their 'Blast' package from 50 to 104mbit at no additional cost.
Here is what I just tested at:

Not fantastic, but a lot better than what I used to have.

Oh, and Telus... -_-

I'm curious, do you have any other services beside internet through CC?
I started Googling/searching broadbandreports.com to see if there were any tier increases for my neck of the woods mentioned.
Couldn't find any for my area.
Seems many out western US are getting it, or got it as early as December (if a modem reboot was done)
(I saw Colorado/Seattle in news papers and forums)
I'm on 'performance' tier with ~30mb down, 6.2mb up. (Think it's sold as 25/5)
I may ask the household to let me do full wipe/restart of the modem to see if I might get lucky.
Though, honestly, I'm starting to grow frustrated with the internet services I use not be able to maintain feeding me the speed rather than my line not being able to support it.
(Or, Comcast perhaps traffic shaping)
One example - Netflix, though they're paying the Comcast 'tax' for interconnection ties directly, a 1080p show I was watching last night still went down to 240p.
EDIT -
Additionally, attached my latest greatest test from speedof.me - an html5 tester (instead of Flash)
I check about once every 2-3 weeks. I've noticed lately that 1) Comcast changed my area downstream channel modulation from QAM64 to QAM256. 2) My 'top speeds' according to attached charts (and my previous testing) take longer to get to. Speedof.me uses several size data blocks to ensure accuracy and not a 'speed boost' in the beginning. My chart graph used to hit the top lines quicker between blocks.
I'm not sure if that's Comcast's fault, or external cause of this test site/here to there.
-
They're doing it to compete with Google/CenturyLink. Not really much competition since those ISPs are offering 1Gig but only in specific areas.
Also, FiOS just upped to 100mbit for their consumer tiers so I think that's the main reason Comcast is doing it.

;~;
AT&T pls.
Gigapower isn't in my area yet, unfortunately, so I'm stuck with these speeds.
-
Wiped/restarted my modem - no speed increase.
There's no <real*> competition in my area. $67 for 5/25 @ 300GB monthly (and after removing SamKnows monitoring, looks like I'll average 170GB a month)
Yeah, Google @ $70 a month is really sounding good, even if the rest of the world can't feed our lines that fast.
*Real being key term. I don't consider Frontier Co at 3mbps (or 6 if I could get it, but don't think I could) xDSL for $60 a mo 'real' internet.

My internetz has lately been acting up, should have 100, oh well;
