Title: Multiple questions!
Post by: Bite That Apple on February 12, 2015, 12:46:18 AM
[1] Looking through members of ulx, I began to get curious of some things here and there. I have seen this before, but I had not really bothered to ask till now.

Whom are these people with these positions, I haven't really ever actually seen or heard of any of these guys.

[2] What happened to Jay? I haven't heard or seen of him in a long time, relating to any ulx/gmod things?

[3] Is Garry's Mod losing it's initial value and care?

[1] I believe they're either close friends of Megiddo or people who were quite active back in the day- people who ran popular servers (WildWill) who we'd play with, or frequent visitors on our own server (Banyon) back when we had one. I know Spbogie worked on quite a bit of ULX with Megiddo in the early days. Good days! Jeez, you're making me all nostalgic ::)

[2] I think Jay is just busy with life, like Megiddo and I. It's pretty hard to balance free time on projects like this when your free time is so limited. :P

[3] Who knows! It still baffles me that Garry's Mod is the eighth most played game on Steam (http://steamcharts.com/) right now- I thought it would have died off by now. The community has always been filled with nitwits and immature people- maybe it's just even more noticeable to me now that I'm older. :P A lot more younger (<15yr) players are playing as well.. However, there's been an increase in large server communities, and it seems to be turning into a business- making money off of scripts, donations, "hiring" custom developers, etc. Garry's Mod used to be free, too, and any custom mods up until recently has always been done for the community and fun, not for profit. I believe that's a big factor in the "value and care" feeling that's been lost.

However, going back to point 2- it's hard to spend all of your free time slaving on something that people mainly take for granted. It's hard for us to see simple ULX modules earning more from being sold than we've made in donations through the entire project (hint: it's not a huge amount). We're in an interesting position though- everyone hates on ULX, but they either won't pay for an admin mod as there are already free ones (http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1424015&p=47120744&viewfull=1#post47120744), or someone will create the "hip new admin mod!" (Evolve, Exsto, etc.), but then support eventually dies as the original creator moves on or gets sick of dealing with support.

Don't worry though- we have plans for ULX moving forward, so long as interest remains and as time allows. :)

Anyways, that's probably enough rambling for me!

*Note: These are my views and may not necessarily reflect the views of Team Ulysses, blah blah other disclaimer stuff. ;D

Nostalgia.
*sigh*

We used to host a Gmod Sandbox server many years ago. Ulysses HeadQuarters
"UHQ Admin" and "Donator (Admin)" were special SMF groups that converted to GMod server groups.
There was an SMF addon where you could add custom fields. We added SteamIDs for that custom field.
Megiddo would add people to special groups here if they had special access on the server, and the server would do an SQL query on the SMF database to see if the SteamID matched.

As I get older, I realize that, for the majority, the average immaturity of the Gmod community just annoys me.
The rare finds I made 10+ years ago were fortunate, and unfortunately, those I enjoyed playing Gmod with have lost time and interest, and I rarely find energy to go looking to see if I can find that same level of interest / behavior is still out there.

I had a short burst of interest for ~2 years in Minecraft with a like-minded bunch, but, that too faded even quicker.

I'm glad that I was just taught some interesting history of ULX.

As for question 3, I was only asking that because I've realized so much as changed now in the last 7/8 years I've been playing Garry's Mod. Updates of course, obviously communities changing. I do not agree with buying/selling scripts, as lua is not a program, it's a scripting language which isn't that hard to learn.

I've noticed that Garry's Mod isn't the same anymore, updates come less frequently, and when updates come, I feel that they have no real meaning, they have no care, no love in them, no passion. Garry himself has made big deals about getting 1 million buyers, then getting 8 million buyers and yet, he doesn't care about his game in my person option. Sure, his updates add a lot of cool (depends who you are) things like Toybox, Workshop, and Nextbox.. (except spawn menu, its even worse and sucks more than before, 10x more bugger now)... but I don't feel the same way about garry's mod.

Continuing on my rant, I remember the evolution of Garry's Mod, and how it was so cool and fun, there was no band wagon that made Garry's Mod dumb.. I suppose I too has nostalgia, but over a different topic and controversy. Though, I'm... I don't know anymore, after creating addons (not as complex and superior as ulx/ulib {even the impossible understanding xgui}) I've just come to learn over time that Garry's Mod is not as great as it used to be...

This is my 10th year as a member of the Ulysses community.

^ That is my old account before this one.

The donator admin rank was one that Megiddo would give to people who were already admins on the old UlyssesHQ server but who donated.

It's been a crazy 10 years! Here's looking forward to 10 more!

Look how cute you were, with your double uppercase first letter, and your affection for ulx back then:

SOrry if this issue has been addressed but.. I am running a windows dedicated server with the ULX Mod installed. When I try to type any Ulx_(command) into the server console it comes beck with unknown command.

However if I get on my server (and I am set up as an admin) I can execute commands with no problem.

Am I doing some wrong? And if you just CANT run commands from the server console wqill this be enabled in a future release?

Btw, I LOVE this mod. Its the best thing besides Garrys Mod itself that I think Ive ever downloaded. Great Job!

Oh, and my understanding, Megiddo can correct me if I'm wrong...Spbogie was a major part of the UCL system in ULib when it first came to be.
I remember Megiddo telling me one day he actually had to go to SpBogie when I inquired about a complex idea.
Mind you, that was only for a particulary challenging UCL question, and this was long before we did inheritance trees.
ULX 2.0 was, I believe, when SpBogie stopped having time like many of us.
Wow, more nostalgia... flags. Back when you gave users in a list various access flags, instead of giving users in groups that had various commands.
It's only gotten better.
Though perhaps more slowly now, I only see it getting better.

Oh, and speaking of Nostalgia; Though I'd lurked here for some months using ULX 1.x with Gmod (5? first to use Lua?)  before registering in June of 2006, I introduced myself to Megiddo on July 6, 2006, in the following PM named "Introducing...."

Hi xxxxx.
 I wanted to introduce myself.
My name is xxxx, a general pc geek (aren't we all?)  :D and Gmod fan.
Though no great genius builder, I've always enjoyed Legos and other interesting building systems, and Garry's mod allowed me to use my computer for such fun. Thanks for making a product that makes administrating a Gmod server so much easier.
I'm sure you probably already get too many requests, so I'm not going to ask outright. However, I wanted to offer my service as a beta tester for any current/future projects you work on.
I'm ##, and have close to 20 years in the pc hardware and software arena.  I can follow test plans, though I don't know if your beta programs have such a process involved. If no test plan, I occasionally run a dedicated server for a few days at a time and can have me and a select trusted few, or the public at large, test functionality.
I'm currently teaching myself LUA, at least in respect to the Gmod implimentation, and working with you and your team would provide a positive experience.
I look forward to your future projects (ULXv2, and anything else), whether I'm a part of pre-release or not.
I'll be around your forum weekly, as its general population _maturity_ seems higher than the facepunch forums, and will help others when I can, while learning from others at the same time.

 Respectfully,
XXXX aka JamminR

(not as complex and superior as ulx/ulib {even the impossible understanding xgui})
It's impossible to understand mainly because XGUI was my first proper lua project. Some of it ended up turning into terrible terrible speghetti code. :P Seriously though- keep working on scripts! Experience developing is the best way to get better, obviously. I'm finding in my current job that code doesn't have to be advanced or perfect. In fact, the best code usually the simplest code- even if it's not very elegant. (... This makes sense in my head, I think)

For whatever reason, my actions, attitude, and ideas later allowed me to become part of the team.
Small miracles never end. ;)
If I'm remembering correctly, I wasn't too involved with ULX back then, and Megiddo was taking a 1 month (or more) "Sabbatical" from the internet- He needed someone to watch over the forums, and you had impeccably good timing ;) But seriously, this place would likely fall apart without your help. Thanks!  ;D

Don't worry.. it appears they're just letting anyone into the inner circle these days! :P 8) 8)
Hey now, our applicants go through a very carefully screened process based on a magical formula involving contributions, skillsets, gmod community server experience, and your opinion on badgers. :P

It appears my account was made in Aug 2006 (Even though I've been following Megiddo since the AIMod days..), first post was Oct '06 (http://forums.ulyssesmod.net/index.php/topic,436.msg2026.html#msg2026). Crazy. I was brought on to work on "Spirit of UGM"- preserving the cool features of UGM into newer Garrysmod versions, but that never quite went anywhere.. (Plus everything is now theoretically possible with the spawnmenu anyways)

It's certainly been a crazy ride up to this point. I was all of fifteen years old when I made my first modification for Garry's Mod, and now I'm turning twenty-six tomorrow. Almost half my life has involved GMod in some way! Unfortunately, my age was reflected in my attitude in a lot of ways in those earlier years...

I made a lot of bad choices with the UGM/ULX team members early on, which caused more grief and emotional thrashing than was really necessary. Spbogie and Jay were both great to work with, though. It all blends together now, but I think they were responsible for the ban and log modules in ULX. I've never liked working on ULX alone because it feels like a coding echo chamber -- how do I know what I think is cool will be appreciated by anyone but myself?

If I remember correctly, JamminR came along at a time that I was losing interest in the community. At this time, I also wanted to go on an Internet sabbatical for a while (which I've done once again since then, it's very refreshing). So, without having any clear idea of what type of person JamminR was, I had him take the kings to the kingdom. It worked out really well though, and JamminR's an awesome guy. :) Without him, I would've probably just given up on the forums altogether -- in part because of time, part because of apathy of helping people who seem to not know basic things about gmod, and part because of those occasional threads/emails that fill me with a sense of rage.

Long story short, while it's been a bumpy road, I love the team we've got now. We have all matured in our time here and we work well together. :D

I'm glad that my little thread here was attracting so much attention by the entire team, and some nostalgia. I was just lurking where my nose doesn't belong, being curious and reviewing what this community actually has. I was just waiting for Megiddo to reply. :)

Man.. 11 years of Garry's Mod.. I remember when Megiddo was first showed me his AI Mod suite... Oh, I have chat logs!
Quote from: 1/31/2005
(17:39:29) Megiddo: link: http://<old url>.com/hostFiles/Meg_AI-Garrysmod_test.zip
(17:39:31) Megiddo: pass is ****
(17:39:34) Stickly Man!: kk
Yup! That's the first time I got to witness Megiddo's endeavors in the Gmod community. :) Took me a while to join in and help out, but we were always discussing ideas and cool things and whatnot- I just liked blowing up watermelons lol.

Interestingly enough, in reference to Megiddo's "bad choices with UGM/ULX team members early on":
Quote from: 10/11/2005
(21:05:36) Megiddo: you know, next time I do a project, remind me to screen the team members
(21:05:43) Stickly Man: ya :|
(21:05:46) Stickly Man: ill be on the team
(21:05:52) Megiddo: you don't know how to code :(
(21:05:53) Stickly Man: unless it involves too heavy of c++ coding :|

Oh man, so many chat logs. Too much nostalgia! Needless to say, I did learn how to code :P, and we're lucky to still have Megiddo around especially with his hard times with team members from the UGM-era, and even accusations of code stealing and general Gmod community nastiness shortly after releasing his first AI mod script.

Haha- this early post on these forums made me laugh: http://forums.ulyssesmod.net/index.php/topic,23.msg95.html#msg95 (http://forums.ulyssesmod.net/index.php/topic,23.msg95.html#msg95)

Title: Re: Multiple questions!
Post by: Stickly Man! on February 14, 2015, 07:28:02 PM
It mainly became defunct- We added a few more spawnable things to the spawn menu, along with access to creating certain entities (like a point to point laser), and some other goodies. Most of it was replaced and made more flexible with Lua in Garry's Mod 9.

Speaking of nostalgia, and for the life of me I can't find further discussion of it here in the forums, Megiddo started a project that would, in my opinion, and even at the time, have blown SpaceBuild away. http://forums.ulyssesmod.net/index.php/topic,184.0.html (http://forums.ulyssesmod.net/index.php/topic,184.0.html) is the only discussion I can find. (and even it links to a LONG dead link)
I can't remember the name of the project, but basically, if a map had spheres/other shapes in it, a player could WALK AROUND THEM in 3d space.
The map did require special internals. If more than one 'planet', you could break gravity, free float, and then land on the other 'planet' and walk 'upright'.
It was slightly buggy, but was great for beta idea/code/implementation.
Last I remember, it died, partially due to Zyklus (Stickly Man's older brother (did ya know he had an older brother that used to hang with Megiddo?)) not making more maps for it.
Only partially. Megiddo has always been one to start awesome projects he barely has time for.

Now that I think of it, I'm amazed he's even married.
Wait, I'm amazed he found time to date or to propose.

:P

I remember this.
I think it was called Ulysses Universe or something to that effect. It was pretty neat.
Title: Re: Multiple questions!
Post by: Stickly Man! on February 15, 2015, 08:30:18 AM
Yup, "Ulysses Universe"- That brings back memories :P  I think there was one main problem we couldn't quite figure out, which was how we could get the player entity itself to rotate around the planet, along with bugs with walking and such. There was also an engine update which caused Zyklus's spherical maps to bee too complex or.. something. The way he was using to make the spherical planets broke. :(

Surprisingly, the FP thread still exists:
http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=423976 (http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=423976)

And, if you search around, the name gets mentioned on other Facepunch threads talking about similar things. There's even a wiki page on how to create maps for it! https://maurits.tv/data/garrysmod/wiki/wiki.garrysmod.com/index65c5-2.html (https://maurits.tv/data/garrysmod/wiki/wiki.garrysmod.com/index65c5-2.html)

Good times, indeed! .. (Crap, I really want to revive UU now...)

We just need to take what's on our Github and make a proper release out of it (after doing a final check for any bugs to be squashed.) Nothing too fancy :P There are still quite a few people who go straight for the "Stable" release version, which is about a year and a half old.
