Is it possible to remove a stolen workshop file?
« on: September 07, 2013, 12:31:01 AM »
I coded this: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=171315714 for one of my servers and it was surprisingly stolen. Any ideas of what to do?
I am not sure, but I also believe that a bunch of other coded addons by me are also leaked on the workshop. Not sure what to do anymore.

I'm not sure how it all works, but you could attempt to report it for copyright infringement or something like that.

According to International and US Copyright laws, Intellectual Property is copyrighted. If you can prove that the workshop publisher stole the work and is misrepresenting its ownership then you are within your rights to take action.

But, before you do, there are a couple things you should ask yourself first.
Is it worth taking action? Is someone else working on your project and releasing it effecting you in any way other than your pride?

If its a matter of you just being upset that someone would steal your work and not give you credit, it may be easier to just write it off as a loss, especially in the gmod lua community where this kind of thing is fairly common and it doesn't really effect you in any way.

If you are selling your code, and having it be released is effecting you then you should definitely take action.

Either way, the link at the top is how you can contact Valve and assuming you can prove your claim, they will take action.

I never sold or gave away my code. I wrote it myself too.

re: ban - Oops, must have missed the 'and delete all posts' question.

Deathtitan,
As much as it's a pain, many people in the Gmod community have little ethics, and want fame at the expense of others.
No, not all, but many.
Even we suffered blatant code copy from some functions in ULX about 3 years ago.
When we asked the author to give more credit, not only did they not, they changed the variable names to direct verbal attacks, yet keeping the exact same command structure.

3 years later, it was brought to thier attention by a peer other than us, and, lo and behold, they apologized for 'conduct unbecoming' and changed the code.

Am I saying you'll be fortunate in this way?
No.
I'm simply stating; Gmod has many immature people; You'll be likely to have more releases 'stolen'.
I've not searched lately, but try searching for ULX or ULib.
We've never released on Workshop, but I'm betting many have.

If its any consolation all 3 ttt maps I've made exclusively for my server I became surprised to find on other servers and on gmod.org/workshop long before I thought of a public release. Allthough on 2 of them I was smart enough to decompile protect the bsp files so none of them could be decompiled but because of theft I've just released everything I do when it's ready. It sucks but as jamminr said that's the gmod community.
Made community pool and community bowling and for the life of me couldn't tell you why they are popular.
Also made the ttt ulx commands.
