My morning project

So, I've been having problems with my laptop's power cord for the past couple weeks. Last night it finally stopped charging all together. I tested the cord and it worked fine, so what's the next logical source, the power connector on the computer. Of course, the power connector on a laptop is mounted, along with everything else, directly on the logic board. And how do you get to the logic board? By taking out absolutly every other piece of the laptop. Which leaves you with this scene at about 7:30 AM.

Turns out the solder joint for the inside pin broke loose. I resoldered it, and it seems to be working. Hopefully it holds.
(If it breaks again, I'm soldering to cord directly to the board, and putting it in a micro case.)

Nice. I took apart an Apple G3 lappy once to try to correct an overheating video problem.
Never managed to actually correct the issue even after fan replacement and extra heat sinks, but, had fun thinking how crazy design engineers have to be to pack it all together.

Too bad you couldn't fix the heat problem. As far as my laptop goes, it runs at about half the temperature not too. There was a good 1/8-1/4 inch of dust built up between the fan and heat sink blades.

It's ammazing how they manage to pack everything in there. One thing I that definitaly helps in taking it appart, besides a nice set of small screwdrivers, is a nice big, sturdy, desk to work at. My desk is about 4'X5' (4'X3' currently clear), and all toghether weighs atleast 400lbs. When I get a chance later this week I'm going to open up my other computers and clean them out, they're all due for it. (I'll try and get some nice pictures of my Dell laptop as I tear it down.)

Bah, don't over fix what isn't broken.
(I know, you're a tech mind, like me... how often do we not follow that advice)

Though I recommend the cleaning, perhaps a strong vacuum and can of compressed air would work well.
Just open the case panel areas that are meant to be opened (or, at least meant easier).
Memory/battery/HD areas... start the vacuum, blow the compressed air over the pc towards the vacuum hose.

I love my Hoover. It really sucks.

Yeah, mom took the picture. I was a little rushed since we were going somewhere in an hour and I needed the laptop there. Which probably explains why I forgot to plug the keyboard and mouse ribbons back in. Whoops. Oh well, everything seems to be working fine now.
