Exactly what the guy above said. I purchased the domain and i am using php's forum software.

only reason i asked is because i wanna build a website for the of it, but don't know where to start. i need web hosting, i have  a custom domain, but just need the skills to build. but ill work that out on my own. thanks for the info!

Not trying to hijack the post or anything, but I personally recommend SMF for some easy forum setup.  I liked it better back when I was deciding how I wanted to setup a forum.  It is also the same forum software used here.

SMF versus PhpBB - My vote SMF.
Though, honestly, PhpBB seemed to have tons more configuration 'out of the box', that, to me, was part of the problem.
I wanted to get up and running, and SMF's control panels seemed more user friendly, while still allowing for configuration I needed.
Do your research, pick what's best for you.
There may be more or newer free ones, I've personally not researched in at least 8 years.

I've tried both SMF and phpBB. I can tell you that SMF is a LOT easier to use BUT, like JamminR said, phpBB has a lot more customization available. Now, saying that SMF is a lot easier doesn't mean phpBB is impossible to use, it's rather straightforward but more complex.

SMF and phpBB (or MyBB) are still the most popular forum making tools. There ARE like those other free ones like userboard (and other names I can't remember at the moment) but they don't offer anywhere near the quality of SMF or phpBB

I'll have to do more research, of course. But my main concerns are I won't be able to find a simple way to build a site that has:

1. a store integration with checkout and everything
2. forum
3. tagging system
4. a way to integrate Steam login API
5. An application system

I'll def have to research but thanks for suggesting phpBB and SMF, I've seen both used, and I'll see which are best for my needs. My current site could use some work, and I'm trying to stray away from Enjin but they have a lot to offer (or at least I've made the most of what they've given me for Advanced plannin).

1. Do-able with any forum, just paypal buttons embedded.
2. phpBB + SMF are forum builders.
3. phpBB + SMF both support this.
4. I know phpBB supports this with a plugin, not sure about SMF.
5. Easily done with google forms (y)

Im really glad to see that this can all be done. I guess I'm just nervous to switch from something I'm so used to building something on my own. Guess Ill have to just research, but im glad you guys helped answer some questions.

Is there a way to include an email notification system as well? Like I can send a message to members via site (or members to other members) and it would start a workflow to email the user that they've received a message on the site.

I believe those are stock options on both (not 100% sure on SMF)

Yes.
As long as you have an SMTP server / account, or access to the PHP mail() function, most forum softwares will support this out of the box. It'll take a tiny bit of configs, but nothing anyone can't handle.

SMF let's me know by email when I've got a PM.
I can disable this if I wish.
I'm pretty sure you have access as a non-admin to this feature in your own profile here.

We used phpBB initially for this community, but back then they did not support forum addons (yes, it was a long time ago). That was the #1 reason we switched to SMF. We've had no reason to switch back to phpBB.
