If you don't know what I'm talking about, a favicon is the small picture that shows up on your tabs/bookmarks when you load certain pages (all sites have them). Sites like Facebook and YouTube have custom one, while this site has the default one (which is why I made it).
It has been brought to my attention that you never put up any favicon for this website so it's showing a default one (which I don't really like). It's not a huge deal, really, although I would like if you could add like a "U" or something as one. This is just a suggestion, I just thought it would be nice to get a favicon here, that's all.
I could make an attempt at making an icon if you wish, although I don't guarantee that it will be great.
-
It's been brought up before:

Ah, I didn't really think it about actually searching THAT up before posting about it. Sorry about that.
I could try to throw something together that you might still like, and that Megiddo wants to have/wanted to have back in 2012 (http://forums.ulyssesmod.net/index.php/topic,5572.msg25499.html#msg25499). If you guys actually have any plans to add a favicon (I didn't really see anything "final" in that thread), I mean.
-
Go ahead and put something together. I'm not against favicons, I just don't have an artistic bone in my body and I wasn't happy with the one proposed on the previous thread. If we like what you create, we'll put it on the site and give you credit for it.

We should make a contest.
First person to make a favicon we like gets a free copy of our library, ULib. Runner up gets ULX. :P :o

It'll be tough to give out a copy of the full suite for free, but I guess it's worth it for a good favicon. :P
-
Isn't ULib + ULX already fr..... OH THATS THE JOKE.

Time to take a shot at the favicon.
-
So I took a shot at it.
It's located here (http://decicus.com/ulyssesmod/favicon/favicon_1.png). I didn't use the img tags, since it's 1600x1600 (well yeah, a bit too big maybe).
I tried to convert it to 16x16, and it seems to be okay, but the drop shadow + glow isn't too visible. Other than that, it's pretty simple when it comes to colors, because I have no clue what else to add.
-
Suggestions:
You should work on it at the 16x16 level instead of the 1600x1600 level... you can't have a lot of detail when you're talking 16x16.
Get closer. This is related to above; since you only have 16x16, there should only be a few pixels worth of background to give the main subject more space.
More contrast. Those shades are awfully close together.
But, I could be wrong entirely -- again, not a creative bone in my body. I'm curious to see what the rest of the team thinks. :)
Good first attempt, though! You're already lightyears ahead of my skill and ability, ha ha.
-
I was typing while Megiddo posted, but his ideas pretty much match mine, so, not editing below.
-------
I like it.
The background tint fade gets lost though at 16x16. (There is one there, right, I'm not just seeing a fade due to my vision issue oddities, right?)
Also, I like the idea of a larger U.
Maybe not as big as my attachment, but, at least somewhat larger...too much matte and frame around the original at 16x16 imo.
(this is hacked from the original image using Irfanview, I don't have any other photo editing software, as like Megiddo, I don't have much graphic artistry in my body)
EDIT - Attachment #2 - Same image as favicon_2, but with Megiddo's higher contrast (WHITE) U.
-
Thanks for the feedback!
I have to agree, that working at 16x16 would probably be the best, but it's pretty hard imo. And while you might think you're not as creative, you're absolutely right.
I'll be taking a shot at something in 16x16, which shouldn't take long, in fact.
I put something small together in a few minutes, just to make a rough idea of what I believe Megiddo seems to want (at least the contrast part). I'll try to work more on it tomorrow (it's getting pretty late here in Norway-land).
Any feedback appreciated!
(Here's the ridiculously small favicon)

Can you try that design but thicker and/or whiter, Decicus? I kind of like JamminR's favicon_3. But... is it just me, or do these more closely resemble horse shoes than 'U's?
-
You should see me draw a cat.
Ends up looking like a snowman.
-
Does this look better?
-
I'd say a little wider still, and it's definitely on the right track.
To take another route, what do you and JamminR think of the one attached? Bet you know right where I got it from... :P
-
That actually looks pretty good. I have no clue (even though it looks familiar) where that's actually from (I probably should know, unless it was only meant for JamminR??). Anyways, I think I have one more example:
The U is a lot thicker here.
Might be too thick now that I think of it...
-
Well, I've enlarged Meg's a bit using irfanview, and, no, I can't really tell where from.
I'd guess some school..the typeface seems like an ordinary new roman font or something.
Not a font I really like, and, my opinion, the width of the actual lines that make the U are too wide.
There's not enough space in the center of Meg's or your last Decicus...they run together in the center.
A good example that I like is the U from our www.ulyssesmod.net page, which, I thought Decicus had used as a basis.

Not much else to do in the weekend, is it? :P
Anyways, I tried to make it less thick, but still a bit wide. I actually used the font for the subtitle of the front page (the one that says "A collection of Garry's Mod addons", at least I think I found the right one). Not that the font is really visible, but still:

Mr. President is correct, I just screen shotted ulyssesmod.net and took a U from the "ULX" in the news title.
I really like your latest one Decicus, what do you think Mr. P and JamminR?
-
I'd say it matches the style from the main page pretty well. I would just try and match the color scheme too. I'm not a huge fan of the dark background. Maybe even a transparent background with a dark letter would look nice.
-
I will give that a shot, MrPresident. Maybe that will in fact look better (if I can make a good example).
Congratulations with 1337 posts, as well!
-
So is this similar to what you had in mind, MrPresident?
It's simple, and just a dark letter with a transparent bg.
-
I can barely see that U. (I don't use light background for my web surfing, so transparent makes it dark on dark..
Meg, not sure MrPresident guessed it.
I think he was just being snarky about our font analyzing.
I know I guessed it though.
Do I get a free copy now?
-

What about the other one I posted before that?
-
Oh, sorry, missed that Meg asked.
I like it.
It's wide in the center area, and bold enough for the letter lines themselves.
(and now that I look back, I didn't guess...*sigh* I wanted my free copy prize)
-
So which one do you think we should use out of what's been proposed, JamminR and Mr. P?
-
Personally I'm not a fan of the last few that Decicus posted. The lettering is too thin and the U is too wide. (in my opinion)
The one I like best is the one Megiddo posted. The screen capture from the front page.

If you wish, I can re-create that with the font and all. Alternatively, you could just use that. It's up to you.
-
Sorry for running your ragged Decicus! :P
Could you modify the one I posted from the homepage? Remove the horizontal "caps" at the top of the U, put in the shadow in place, and make it the correct dimensions (16x16)? I'm leaning towards that one too, and since it it, after all, taken from the homepage it should help offer a sense of unity.
-
No problem, Megiddo.
I think I understand what you mean, do you want it something like this? (this is just an example, I can modify the font quite easily): (http://decicus.com/ulyssesmod/favicon/favicon_4_1.png)
-
I like it quite a bit! Can you clean up the shadow, though? It seems uneven.
-
I basically re-did the shadow, and made two versions. One with thicker font than the other:
Thicker: (http://decicus.com/ulyssesmod/favicon/favicon_4_2.png)
Normal-like: (http://decicus.com/ulyssesmod/favicon/favicon_5.png)
Decide which one you like the best.
-
I think the thicker one is pretty much perfect. I'll put it up this weekend.
-
Happy that you liked it!
-
Favicon is up. Thanks Decicus! We've given you credit on the "About" page.
-
No problem! Glad I could help, sort of. It looks pretty good as an icon too.
-
Try putting the favicon inside of the forum directory too. Since you use a subdomain for the forums, it only shows for me when I'm on the main page but continues to be blank on the forums.

It's already there (http://forums.ulyssesmod.net/favicon.ico) and shows for me.

Yeah, you probably have to clear the cache. It doesn't work for me atm, but I opened up the forums in "incognito mode" and it worked.
