"Discouraging" Players
« on: July 15, 2013, 02:40:26 AM »
Since Garrys Mod is a magnet for minges and many minges can't handle being banned (they attack server), i have an idea for keeping them out of the server while not banning (it makes it extremely unfun to play).

It does the following every few minutes at random intervals to players that have this enabled on them:

  • Simulates the player losing the connection to server (they get dropped)
  • Simulates random high ping/lag by slowing movement speed then returning it to normal every couple of seconds.
  • Chat commands are delayed so when the player chats, they take a few seconds before they appear on screen.
  • When talking over voicecomm, their voice drops in and out.

P.S. I dont even know if any of this is possible, but i thought i would throw it out there anyways.

All are possible except maybe the per-player high latency. This is kind of an underhanded thing to do, though... :P

Hey its better than what's currently happening to me to happen to you; getting hit with DOS/DDOS attacks for 5 months and then getting hit with a 1GB/s DDOS that forces your datacenter to nullroute your IPs.

I would rather discourage than ban to prevent this from happening again.

I'm surprised a script kiddie GMod player could afford an attack that large.

And, as someone who's a white-grey hat IT person, the grey in me would think that a black hat, joining such a server that's so slow, would think "wow, this server so slow, I'd bet it would be a cinch to take down using my ddos attack".
Poof.
You get attacked anyway.
