Look, we all think ulx crashban is illegal. But you should put it as this way: does a courthouse really care if your game crashed? Crashban is NOT damaging equipment.
Enough said.

It's not illegal, it's just an asshole (pardon my language) thing to do. It's just crashing the client. Now, if you were booting them off their networks (DoS), then it'd be illegal.
Once you get to know me, you'll find you'll have never met me at all.

There are a number of perfectly legal things I could do to you if I met you in person too, and yet you would like none of them. Common decency should always be considered.

Why did you create an account just to post this?

It may not be illegal, but it is overly excessive and we're not going to condone that kind of thing.
There are plenty of things you CAN do but shouldn't as a server owner.

To name a few:
Rebind players' keys. (Yes, you used to be able to do this)
Crash their client or run quit on them (You also used to be able to do this)
Activate their mic without their knowledge and listen to them talk.

In my opinion, no reputable servers would ever do anything like this. There's no reason and all you're doing is being a bully because you think it's funny.

What's the difference between banning someone and banning someone while crashing their client other than causing them more frustration.

Look, we all think ulx crashban is illegal.

I'd never heard of it until you posted it.
In the legal world, there are indeed laws in various countries that consider exploiting computer code for use other than it's original intent "illegal", especially when mis-use disturbs proper functioning of software. As I'm not aware of how/what is used in the crashban code you've just now mentioned, I imagine and would presume I'm right that whatever causes the game to crash wasn't meant to be used for malicious intent, therefore possibly making it illegal in some countries.

To clarify for anyone who may not be aware, 'ulx crashban' is a (or one of many) third-party ULX commands that we do not have any control over. It is not included in standard ULX at all.

Expanding on Mr. President's post with an example, servers can also dump thousands of files in your data folder while playing:

This is also what ULX crashban does. Writes 2,4 GB of useless data to a player's hard drive... The command is part of ULX Extended, which is being sold on ScriptFodder.

Sadly all three of those things have been used on me and I've seen them being used on others many times.
Luckily all of the servers I have seen these on have died due to a lack of popularity.

A little late to the party but first of Vim is a nice abusive relationship, and second...

I feel that crashing players only makes them angrier then if they would be if you had just banned them, this could lead to a ton of unforeseen consequences.
Honestly I think the best course of action is to actually talk to players in a more calm environment you would be surprised how many rule breakers can become good friends.

Hah, I'll never forget the person who threatened to DDoS me because I froze him while spamming. Results vary on trying to talk to people, I suppose.

This is sound advice for pretty much anything, in-game or in-life. :p

I'll never forget the person who DID DDoS me for a few weeks because he was banned from a server. The best part was, I didn't have anything to do with it. My brother banned him.

I can't wait to get my own place.

If I worked on a command-line or non-windows system more than once in a blue moon, I'd bother to learn Vim and I imagine it would be quite efficient to use once I got a bit of practice. Until then, it's Notepad++ for me.

I think we've passed the event horizon on this tangent.

My reason for not using Vim isn't because I can't use it on Windows, but because I don't think it's worth the time investment to learn if I can use Notepad++ just fine.
